Women's Team to face Swieqi United in first match of the league

by Ayrton Galea - 14th October 2014

Birkirkara FC Women's Team will launch their BOV Women's First Division League campaign this evening, when in their first match, they will take on one of the two new teams in the competition, Swieqi United FC.

This will be the second league match for Swieqi United FC, after losing 6-0 to Tarxien Rainbows FC in their debut in Women's football.

Birkirkara gave a splendid performance in the BOV Women's Super Cup but it was not enough, as Hibernians scored twice in the Extra-Time period to lift the first honour of the season. However, Birkirkara's Coach, Mr. Johann Scicluna praised the team's performance, when we spoke with him just a few hours before the new domestic league.

“We had a very good game, even if at some moments we didn't show our true potential. The game could have gone either way as several scoring opportunities were created. However, we were punished for the first little mistake that we did, to lose the first honour of the season.”

This year, the league will have a new format consisting of eleven teams, after Gozo withdrew from the league in the last days. In the first round, all teams will play against each other. Then, the teams will split in the Championship Pool and the Relegation Pool and each team play another two rounds.

We talked with the Women's Coach about the new format of the league and how is he looking forward for this season.

“This season will bring new challenges to the team and our team is highly enthusiastic for this league campaign. For us, this season is a challenge to show our collective effort. Our squad is completed thanks to a mixture of young and experienced players.”

After losing the services of Rachel Cuschieri, Birkirkara strengthened the squad by three players namely Tara Attard, who joined our Club on loan from Kirkop United FC, German midfielder, Hanna Tegelmann and latest signing, Melania Bajada. Coach Scicluna said “First of all, I would like to wish all the success to Rachel Cuschieri who was the first Maltese Women player to earn a professional contract outside our island. Regarding our squad, we managed to strengthen our squad with the signings of Tara Attard, the German midfielder Hanna Tegelmann who has so far showed satisfactory level for our league, and in the last days we reached an agreement with Melania Bajada, who needs no introduction to Women's football.”

The match will be played at Zebbug Grounds and is scheduled to kick off at 20:15.
