Stripes take on Zebbug with them aim to move second

by Ayrton Galea - 18th April 2015

Birkirkara FC will be seeking to make the most of Valletta's slip-up on Friday and regain the second place in the BOV Premier League, when on Sunday afternoon they take on Zebbug Rangers FC.

The Stripes saw their hopes of increasing the pressure on leaders Hibernians dashed last Friday, when despite a late strong comeback, they only earned a point in a 2-2 draw against Qormi. By dropping two precious points, they not only lost ground to Hibernians but also fell to the third place, one point behind Valletta.

However, on a more positive note, with last Friday's draw, the Stripes extended their unbeaten run to seventeen matches in the BOV Premier League, and on Sunday they will be seeking to complete their fifth month without a defeat. Their last defeat goes back to the 22 November 2014, when they lost 4-3 to Pieta Hotspurs. A win for Birkirkara will see them climb to the second place, since Valletta were held in a 3-3 draw by Sliema Wanderers.

On the other hand, Zebbug Rangers, who were promoted to the Premier League this season, are battling to retain their place in the top division. However, their task is anything but plainsailing as they are at the bottom place with Pieta Hotspurs with twelve points each, two under Tarxien Rainbows. They are coming from eighth straight defeats, the last being a 4-1 defeat against Balzan.

Birkirkara will be without the services of defenders Joseph Zerafa and Mauricio Mazzetti, who both collected their fourth yellow card in the 2-2 draw against Qormi. Zebbug Rangers have David Alejandro Reano suspended, after he also collected his fourth yellow card in their last match.

The Stripes has so far won both encounters in the league. While in the first round, the Stripes found no difficulty to in the 3-0 win, in the second round, they had to recover from a goal down to win the match 3-1, thanks to goals by Rafael Ledesma, Ellinton Morais and Edmond Agius.

The match will be played at the Hibernians Stadium and is scheduled to kick off at 16:00.

Come on the Stripes!
