Birkirkara FC wasted a good opportunity to keep the pace with leaders Hibernians when with a below-average performance they only managed to get a draw against Mgarr United as the latter scored ten minutes from time to cancel Raina Giusti's first-half goal and dash their title aspirations.

The Stripes now trail five points to Hibernians and the latter have a game in hand as this evening they will start as hot favourites to beat Pembroke Athleta. If the Paolites win, they will move eighth points ahead and therefore winning the remaining direct two clashes against them won't be enough for the Stripes to level points.

In a balanced first half, with the Stripes being more creative, they surged ahead on the twenty-sixth minute. Kelly Agius Pace served Raina Giusti who sprinted inside the box and showed great abilities to dribble past her marker before drilling a low shot past the Mgarr goalkeeper.

After the break, with the wind blowing in Mgarr's favour, the latter were the better side as the Stripes struggled to keep possession. Mgarr's superiority paid off ten minutes from time when Rachel Nolan lobbed over goalkeeper Janice Xuereb.

BIRKIRKARA: Janice Xuereb, Melania Bajada, Yasmeen Vella, Stephania Farrugia, Mariah Sciberras, Gabriella Zahra, Kim Parnis, Melissa Stickland (78' Sarah Urpani), Raina Giusti, Catherine Campbell, Kelly Agius Pace (67' Isabelle Mazzitelli).

Scorers: 26' Raina Giusti (Birkirkara), 80' Rachel Nolan (Mgarr United)
