'Stripes' made to rue missed chances
by Matthaeus Grasso - 13th April 2009In front of just a few Birkirkara hardcore supporters, the team failed to capitalize on a number of good scoring opportunities, and were punished late in the second-half with two unexpected goals.
The match itself was very tight, with neither side willing to concede any goals. Hibernians went closest of the two sides to opening the score, when a corner from Omar Borg's left wasn't handled properly by the Birkirkara rear guard, only for a defender to clear off the line. On the other hand, George Mallia missed a clear goal scoring opportunity, when in a one-on-one situation, the Maltese international was denied by Mario Muscat what would have been the first goal of the match.
An entertaining first-half ended 0-0
The second part of the encounter, continued to provide the expected enthusiasm, as now Hibernians looked more eager to go for the win.
The first goal of the match arrived after seventy-nine minutes, as the referee awarded a rather controversial free-kick for the 'Paolites', which was directed towards the second post. Goalkeeper Omar Borg failed to punch the ball, only to find Jean Paul Farrugia, who headed-in from close range.
With our team still shocked, Terrence Scerri found another goal three minutes from time to make the final score 2-0 for the current leaders.
