Birkirkara consolodate third place
by Matthaeus Grasso - 26th April 2009On Saturday, after three defeats in a row, 'The Stripes' returned to winning ways with a 3-1 victory over Floriana.
With the title aspirations practically dead and gone, our side still needed to gain all three points to ensure a top three finish come the end of the season, which would ensure a place in the UEFA Cup first qualification round.
The match itself was rather low-key, with the Birkirkara keeper Bernard Paris, rarely being tested throughout the ninety minutes.
The first goal of the match arrived just after eleven minutes, as an Alan Tabone freekick was headed-in by Ronni Hartvig who was making his comeback after being suspended for the match against Hibernians.
Birkirkara's second arrived on sixty-eight minutes, when a good Jean Pierre Mifsud Triganza pass, found Trevor Cilia who slotted home to make it 2-0.
Five minutes from the end, Fenech served Mifsud Triganza, with the latter going past goalkeeper Glen Zammit before putting the ball in the empty net to make it three for the 'Red and Yellows'.
Floriana's first and only goal arrived deep into stoppage time, when a Mauro Brincat freekick was headed-in by Orosco Anonam to make the final score 3-1.
