Sole leaders Birkirkara to start resisting pressure

by Ayrton Galea - 30th March 2013

Still fresh from taking sole leadership of the BOV Premier League, Birkirkara will continue their battle to win their fourth Championship when this afternoon they will face Tarxien Rainbows.

Two weeks ago Birkirkara gave a five-star performance to defeat Valletta, and moved two points clear at the top of the table. A win that put the Stripes in an advantageous position for claiming the Championship, as now their destiny is in their own hands.

However, the Championship is far from over yet. A championship full of surprises, and teams losing their form quickly, the Stripes would make a fatal mistake if they become over confident.

The defeat against Sliema Wanderers in the first match of the Championship Pool phase seemed to be a wake-up call for the Stripes, as they made a strong comeback by winning three consecutive games. They gave superb performances to defeat Hibernians, trashing Mosta and beating Valletta in their last match with a goal in each half.

On the other hand, Tarxien Rainbows are also going through a high flying moment, as after suffering a defeat against Hibernians in the opening match of the Championship Pool, they grabbed three positive results in their last outings by beating Mosta, defeating Valletta and registered a goal-less draw in their last outing against Sliema Wanderers.

So far it was two out of two for the Stripes in their encounters against Tarxien in this league campaign, with comfortable wins of 4-1 and 5-0 respectively. Birkirkara should come out for the match confident and with believe that they can make it three from and three to move a step closer to claiming the title. However, to do so, Birkirkara must remain in their best form as Tarxien could spring a surprise for any opponent who underestimates their potential.

Birkirkara who are first, with 31 points, will be all out for the victory to move temporarily four points clear over Hibernians who will face rivals Valletta in their match which is also scheduled for today.

The Stripes are expected to be in full-force while Manuel Caruana will be missing for the Rainbows after receiving a one-match ban.

The match will be played at the National Stadium and is scheduled to kick off at 14:00.

We would like to urge all the Birkirkara faithful to come and support the team and to be the 12th player on the pitch.

Come on the Stripes.
