Birkirkara and Mosta face off in Women's knockout final
by Ayrton Galea - 28th May 2013The 2012-2013 season will come to an end with the Final of the Women's knockout this Wednesday when Birkirkara will face Mosta, in the battle for the second most prestigious domestic honour.
Motivation will not be lacking for both sides. Birkirkara are determined to complete their successful season by winning the double. On the other hand, this could be the a consolation to Mosta after losing the title just three weeks ago.
This will be the second consecutive final that will feature these top sides. Last year's edition was won by Mosta thanks to the penalty shoot-out after Birkirkara clinched the BOV Women's First Division League title just a few weeks before.
Birkirkara could not approach this match with a higher morale as there is no doubt that the decisive match of three weeks ago is still fresh in their mind, when they beat the same Mosta to clinch the league title. Mosta will also not have forgotten the match, and there is no doubt that they will be all out to seek revenge.
Both teams began their commitments in this competition from the quarter-final stage.
In the quarter-final, Isabelle Mazzitelli kept her brilliant form of the week before when she had notched a dramatic goal to handle Birkirkara the title, with another decisive goal against Pembroke to put the Stripes in the semi-final. In the semi-final played last Thursday, Birkirkara were superior for their opponents Tarxien Rainbows, and they found no difficulty to advance to the final with a comfortable 3-0 score.
On the other hand, Mosta had to a difficult challenge in eliminating Hibernians, and a penalty shoot-out had to decide the winner, after the score was still odds even after playing 120 minutes. In the semi-final, the Blues also had a stern test, as it was a single goal in the extra-time period that eliminated Gozo with a 1-0 score after the score was still goal-less after the 90 minutes.
This will be the sixth time that these two teams are going to meet this season. Mosta won the first match of the Super Cup by the means of the penalty shoot-out to clinch the first honour of the season. The Blues kept their fine form against the Stripes by beating them in the first round of the league as well. The second and third round matches ended in draws. However, all drama was left to the final fourth-round league match where despite being a depleted side, the Stripes defeated Mosta to win their second consecutive title.
Besides Maryrose Cardona who will be missing the match due to suspension, Coach Johann Scicluna has no selection problems.
The match will be played at the Centenary Stadium and it is scheduled to kick off at 19:00.
We would like to encourage all the Birkirkara supporters to come to the stadium to once again be the 12th player on the pitch like they were three weeks ago in the memorable league decisive match against Mosta.
Come on the Stripes!
