Under 15's team extend their high-flying start
by Ayrton Galea - 21st October 2013Birkirkara Under-15's Team extended their high flying start in the APS Bank Under-15's Section B League by clinching their third consecutive victory when in an entertaining match, they overcame the resilient Zabbar St. Patrick's with a 2-0 score.
Following two comfortable victories in two matches, Birkirkara yesterday evening found an organised opponent, who right from the start defended in numbers for long stretches with the aim to keep the score level.
However, despite failing to give the best performance, the attitude of the Birkirkara players was once again an impressive one. The Stripes made the best out of their scoring opportunities to score a goal in each half to seal the issue.
Zabbar St. Patrick's match, mostly based on the counter-attacks seemed to be leaving the desired results, as on the eighteenth minutes, they were awarded a controversial penalty. However, they were denied by an excellent save of goalkeeper Clyde Aquilina.
The saved penalty seemed to be the turning point of the match, as the Stripes were now boosted and just four minutes later, on the twenty-second minute, they surged ahead thanks to Karl Caruana.
After ending the first half with a narrow lead, the Stripes continued to be the best side on the pitch by piling pressure on their opponents but Zabbar St. Patrick's were having an excellent day at the back, and they were rarely penetrated.
However, Birkirkara's hunger for the three points was too much for their opponents and they doubled the lead to seal the issue. On the forty-fifth minute mark, following a great move on the right flank by Ayrton Attard, the ball ended-up in Gianluca Zammit's feet who had no difficulty in tapping.
Zabbar St. Patrick's tried to make a reaction, but the Stripes stood strong to make them three out of three to extend their high-flying start in the league.
