Under 14's win Luxol Challenge Cup
by Ayrton Galea - 3rd January 2014Birkirkara confirmed that they were the best Under-14 team in this edition of the St Andrew's International Football Tournament by hitting five past hosts St Andrew's in the 2000 Category Final to lift as winners the Luxol Challenge Cup.
Following taking an early lead, the Stripes continued to show their total superiority to make sure of the empathic victory in the first half where they scored four goals before sealing the issue with the fifth in the second half.
The award was more than deserved as Birkirkara had a five-star performance throughout the whole tournament.
The other final in the morning, from the Under-16 Category, was a replica of the match played in this category group between Valletta and Paola Hibernians where this time, the latter managed to win the match when they scored just before the end of the first half of extra time. Valletta pressed hard in the second half of extra time but Paola Hibs kept firm, thanks to some prompt handling from their goalkeeper.
These two finals ended an intensive week of non-stop football at Luxol Stadium during the 4th Edition of the St Andrew's Christmas International Tournament.
The Tournament, which was organized with the authorization of the Youth and Grassroots Committee of MFA, was played in a most Fair Play atmosphere from the players where Respect also reigned, both from coaches and parents present. The well attended spectators witnessed not less than 133 goals in 41 matches played.
A word of praise surely must go to the MFA referees, both young and experienced, who controlled the matches with authority.
