Launch of Birkirkara FC Youth Academy

by Ayrton Galea - 1st August 2014

Birkirkara FC Youth Academy held its first official administrative meeting yesterday evening, at the Birkirkara FC Training Grounds. The Academy will be operating as a semi-autonomous branch of Birkirkara FC.

Club's President Mr Joseph Zammit, and Club's Secretary Mr Jonathan Friggieri were present for the meeting, and they thanked the new administration of the Academy for volunteering their services to the Club. The Club's vision for the Academy was explained and discussed, which is to make the Academy an elite school of football that will be the best on the island. The target of the Academy is to prepare its footballers for senior team football, with the specific aim to supply Birkirkara FC's senior team with top notch players.

The Academy will be building on the solid grounds of what was the Club's Youth Nursery, but it will take a new direction with an emphasis on quality over quantity. Players will receive individual attention, in smaller groups. The Academy has employed qualified football coaches and professional supporting staff, which include fitness and physical trainers and a goalkeeper's coach, who will be under the guidance of the Director of Youth Coaching, Mr Mark Bondin, and the Club's Head Coach, Mr Paul Zammit.

The administrative board of the Academy is chaired by Mr Ivan Mizzi, and Mr Clyde Micallef was appointed as the Vice-Chairman. Mr James Mizzi is the Secretary, while Ms Rita Camenzuli is the Administrator. Mr Antony Debono has been given the role of Treasurer, assisted by Mr Robert Pace, who will also be the Events Manager. Mr Charles Sciberras will be acting as the Technical Advisor, and Mr Massimo Fenech will be the Team Manager (competitive teams) and is also in charge of overseeing the upkeep of the facilities.

Players who are interested in joining the Academy are to send an email on academy@birkirkarafc.com.
