Under-15's consolidate top spot
by Ayrton Galea - 25th March 2015Birkirkara FC Under-15's Team started the second round commitments on a positive note as they consolidated their sole leadership in the APS Bank Under-15's League Section thanks to a 2-1 victory over Mosta FC.
Only two points separated these two teams prior to top of the table clash, and the Stripes enjoyed the last laugh in a tale of three goals. Thanks to this victory, the Stripes opened a four-gap over Mosta and two points over Hibernians who defeated Valletta 1-0.
The First Half
There was a balanced start to the match, but Mosta, who needed a win, started more aggressive and they took the lead after ten minutes, thanks to a fast break-away.
This was a wake-up call for the Stripes, and their instant reaction was converted with the equalising goal just six minutes later. Miguel Mifsud found Ayrton Attard and the latter served Carlo Zammit Lonardelli, who unleashed a powerful strike that gave no chance to the Mosta goalkeeper.
With momentum on their side, the Stripes remained the better team and they should have surged ahead past the half-hour mark. With only the goalkeeper to beat, Ayrton Attard failed to hit the target, following a cross from the left by Ryan Tonna.
The first-half found both teams heading to their dressing rooms with a 1-1 draw.
The Second Half
The opening stages of the second were a balanced affair, and although Birkirkara were playing the better football, Mosta were relying on their speed on their counter to threaten regaining the lead.
Ayrton Attard was involved in action once again on the fifty-third minute, when he showed great skills to dribble past his direct marker but failed to hit the target in-front of the goalkeeper, as the Stripes continued to press forward.
However, Ayrton Attard, was quick to make amends, as he put Birkirkara in the lead just before the hour-mark from a penalty-kick, after Zak Grech was fouled inside the box.
The Stripes held strong for the result, and a frustrated Mosta side had two players sent off. The referee's full-time whistle found the Stripes consolidating their top spot in the league.
