Under-15's Team keeps marching on
by Ayrton Galea - 1st April 2015Birkirkara FC Under-15's Team had another clinical performance on Sunday morning to overcome the challenge of San Gwann with a 2-0, victory to consolidate their place at the top of the APS Under-15's League Section A.
Two goals in the first twenty-two minutes by Carlo Zammit Lonardelli and Zak Grech rounded an excellent first-half performance which was enough for the Stripes, as they controlled the strong reaction by San Gwann in the second half, who failed to break-down the strong Birkirkara defence.
The First Half
Buoyed by an aggressive start that led to early superiority, the Stripes registered the opening goal after just ten minutes. Carlo Zammit Lonardelli delivered a brilliant in-swinging second-post corner kick, that surprised the San Gwann goalkeeper who deflected the ball into his own net.
Leading by one, the Stripes continued to dictate matters as they enjoyed large swatches of possession. On the other hand, San Gwann were relying on their speed on the counter. On the seventeenth minute San Gwann had an attempt from such a counter-attack, which failed to trouble the Birkirkara goalkeeper, Clyde Aquilina.
Birkirkara doubled their lead in their next attack on the twenty-second minute. In an excellent build-up for the Stripes, Kyle Mifsud sent the ball to Zak Grech who fired home with a fierce strike
The end of the first half found the Stripes enjoying a comfortable two-goal cushion.
The Second Half
With an up-hill struggle, and just thirty-five minutes to regain their pride, San Gwann went out with all guns blazing. A dangerous free-kick after just two minutes ended over. The Stripes replied with a fine effort by Ayrton Attard from inside the box, which ended wide.
San Gwann should have pulled one back on the fifty-first minute. A fast counter-attack caught the Birkirkara defence on the wrong foot, with the San Gwann player rounding the goalkeeper but his effort was blocked by a Birkirkara defender off the goal-line.
The Stripes were having some ‘hot and cold' moments during the match which saw them struggling at one point, while regaining superiority in the next few moments. On the fiftieth minute, Miguel Amato had a threatening cross punched into safety by the goalkeeper.
San Gwann had the last scoring opportunity of the match five minutes from time, when off a well-taken corner, a header sailed over the bar ,as the Stripes registered another wine that cemented their top spot.
