by Ayrton Galea - 12th July 2016Birkirkara FC Women's Team began their recruitment drive this summer under the guidance of coach Shawn Meilak, when they strengthened the squad with five new players.
The Stripes have acquired the services of goalkeeper Rosemarie Baldacchino, and players Cassie Camilleri, Sonia Schembri, Kelly Lee and Leanne Micallef who all joined our Club on a permanent move. Simone Buttigieg, who last year was on loan, will also be forming part of the squad for this season.
Goalkeeper Rosemarie Baldacchino is considered as one of best goalkeepers on our island, and she has had a number of appearances with the National Team. With the signing of Baldacchino, the Stripes will be having two of the best goalkeepers in Women's football, as she will be joining fellow National Team goalkeeper Janice Xuereb.
The defensive department was strengthened with the acquisitions of two promising players, Cassie Camilleri and Sonia Schembri who are both twenty years of age. Cassie, who last season was deployed in defence, had solid performances while Sonia is known for her determination and her speed on the flank.
Under-19's National Team player Leanne Micallef is considered to be an asset signing to strengthen the attacking department. Having played in all the ranks of the National youth teams, the promising forward is well known for her speed and technique.
English player Kelly Lee, who plays as a midfielder, will be starting her second adventure with our Club after forming part of the squad during the 2012-2013 season, where the Stripes won the title in a dramatic way thanks to a goal in the additional time of the second half in the final match against Mosta FC.
We would like to welcome all players while we wish them all the best of luck in their adventure with our Club.
