BOV Women's League - Mgarr United FC 1-1 Birkirkara FC
by Ayrton Galea - 23rd October 2019The first direct clash of the BOV Women's League between Birkirkara FC and Mgarr United FC ended all square in a 1-1 draw in an entertaining match played on Tuesday evening at the Mgarr Grounds.
Birkirkara, the defending-champions, can only blame themselves for dropping their first two points of the season following having an edge over their opponents for long stretches.
However, Mgarr United confirmed their potential following strengthening their squad with several signings and delivered a bold statement of their title aspirations inspired by last season's top-scorer, Haley Bugeja.
The Stripes enjoyed the upper hand for long stretches in the opening twenty-five minutes and they had a goal by Loza Abera disallowed in a controversial decision after the forward was well served by Tracy Teuma.
The Greens surged ahead with their first shot on target after twenty-seven minutes. Amber Grech supplied an inch-perfect through-ball towards the on-running Haley Bugeja whose first touch was up to perfection before placing the ball past Janice Xuereb.
The Stripes made the score level eleven minutes later. Ann-Marie Said hit a wonderful free-kick from outside the box that gave goalkeeper Rachelle Lynn Borg no chance to score her second goal in the last two matches.
Latest signing Esther Anu made her debut on the fifty-fourth minute when she replaced Veronique Mifsud. The rapid-winger was included on the right-wing.
Anu almost made an immediate impact on the sixty-seventh minute as following a dazzling run, her cross-shot from the right was turned into a corner kick by the alert Mgarr goalkeeper.
Mgarr were unlucky not retake the lead on the eighty-second minute when a header from inside the box was cleared off the goal-line by defender Stephania Farrugia.
