Ini Etim Akpan was born on the 3 August 1984. This Nigerian goalkeeper also holds a Maltese citizenship, and he joined our Club in October 2012.
Akpan was brought to Malta by Sliema Wanderers in the 2010-2011 season before he joined first Division side Lija Athletics in the following season. With Lija, he had 14 appearances.
With Birkirkara taking part in the AME Cup matches in the 2012-2013 Season, Birkirkara loaned Lija's goalkeeper Akpan where he made one appearance in this competition with Birkirkara managing to win this minor award. However, Ini returned to Lija, before moving to our Club in October.
He made his official debut with our Club on the 27 October when he went as a substitute in the narrow 1-0 victory over Hibernians. During this season, he made three appearances.
Birkirkara FC bought Ini Atkpan with a permanent transfer in the 2013-2014 season as on Wednesday, 10 July, the club reached an agreement with Lija Athletics over the permanent transfer of the Nigernian born, nuetralised Maltese goalkeeper. Atkpan signed a five-year contract with Birkirkara FC.
In the 2015-2016 season, Akpan had the best season with our Club, since joining in 2012. The robust goalkeeper played nine matches with our Club, in which two were of the first round of the UEFA Europa League. During these nine matches, he succeeded at seven clean-sheets.
