Lattes' brace gives Birkirkara win over Qormi
by Ayrton Galea - 22nd November 2010On Sunday evening, Birkirkara returned to winning ways when they defeated Qormi with a 2-0 score thanks to a brace by the Argentine Emiliano Lattes.
Birkirkara gave a very satisfying performance, thanks to a good level of football and they managed to dominate Qormi from the first whistle. If the forward line had better conclusions for some opportunities they created, the score would have been higher.
Besides Esequiel Lovizon, Trevor Cilia and Nikola Vukanac were also not available for selection as they were injured. Karl Pulo replaced Trevor Cilia and Patrick Borg replaced the Serbian defender.
Birkirkara could easily have taken the lead after just few seconds when Michael Galea was left unmarked and he tried a lob shot which ended a little bit wide.
On the 20th minute later, Emiliano Lattes had a powerful shot from inside the box from an ideal position but it ended wide.
Birkirkara had another golden opportunity to open the score, when on the 30th minute a cross by Emiliano Lattes was handed in the box by a Qormi defender with Marco Borg having no option but to order a penalty kick. Captain Michael Galea stepped up for the penalty but his low shot was neutralized by Matthew Farrugia.
On the 38th minute a low powerful shot by Michael Galea was neutralised again by Matthew Farrugia.
"The Stripes" managed to break the deadlock when they took the lead on the 42nd minute. A long cross found Emiliano Lattes advancing in the box and his shot hit the right post before going into the net.
The first half ended 1-0 for Birkirkara who managed to dominate but failed to seal the match.
The second half continued where the first half left off, as Birkirkara continued to dominate, but it was a late goal that made sure that Birkirkara managed to grab maximum points.
Birkirkara almost made them 2-0 on the 63rd minute when a low cross by Karl Pulo found Michael Galea who managed to beat the goalkeeper but Stefan Giglio managed to clear the ball from the goal line.
Ten minutes later a long distance shot from Shaun Bajada ended wide.
On the 87th minute, Birkirkara made sure of bagging the three points when Emiliano Lattes concluded his effort with a low shot which gave Matthew Farrugia no chance.
On the 88th minute, Alan Tabone made his first appearance in this Premier League as he was returning from an injury, and he replaced captain Michael Galea.
The full time whistle found the Birkirkara supporters applauding the players for the effort shown and their very satisfying performance.
Thanks to this win, Birkirkara moved fifth with twelve points, one point away from three teams which are all in the second place, Marsaxlokk, Tarxien and Floriana who all have 13 points.
